My Favorite Player – The Captain

I haven’t had the pleasure of watching Derek Jeter live, but it is on my bucket list of things to do real soon as DJ’s career is coming to a close and the rate he is going, it could come faster than I want it to.

As of this post, Jeter is just few hits shy of becoming the 27th member of the 3000 hit club and the first Yankee to ever accomplish this feat.  Out of all the other Yankee greats, it would be the former 1996 rookie of the year to be the first.

While the  feat will be a great accomplishment, the underlining story coming into season was that DJ’s age had caught up to him.  His batting average took a big dip last year from .334 to .270.  This year he attempted to reform his hitting stance which he only abandon after a couple weeks into the season.   His average has been hovering around the .260-.270 area all season long.

He probably will never regain the form that made him a great contact hitter, but he still strikes fear into opposing pitchers because he is capable of coming up with the big hits when needed.  He’s disciplined and still athletically gifted enough to make the hits count.

Jeter is entering the final chapter of his career and if he is as smart as many people think he is, he will have to make sacrifices for the better of the team and move down the line up.  I don’t like the fact he would be moved from his normal number two spot, but to be a great leader and inspire your teammates, I think you have to move.

I get called a band wagoner a lot as I root for the Yankees, but they are the reason why I became a baseball fan again in the late 90s and what I remember the most is the play of a certain shortstop named Derek Jeter.

The Captain is my favorite baseball player and while I haven’t seen him yet, I know I will be witnessing a all time great no matter where he is hitting in the line up.
