Rookie Symposium Gets the Herm Edwards Treatment
The NFL’s Rookie Symposium is a fantastic educational tool for the NFL’s latest crop of talent, the latest group of soon to be millionaires and the latest group of potential targets. Within 5 years of leaving the NFL 85% of players are bankrupt and broke. Not all players are millionaires, though. In fact the majority of them are not. Many players try to live up to the millionaire idea that they themselves had in their head, or what their families have in their head. Think of it this way. The average NFL career is 3.4 years. The NFL base salary minimum is $375k and half of their money goes to taxes while another 3% goes to agents and lawyers. You’re only talking about $700K over the course of your whole career. I’m not trying to say that NFL players are underpaid, or should ever have to worry about money problems. But, they don’t have stupid money like Lil’ Wayne or Bill Gates; people that we sometimes associate NFL players with. The majority of the money in the NFL is owned by very few. For every Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, there are 100 practice squad or league minimum players.
The point is, these guys need some guidance and the NFL Rookie Symposium is a start. Hearing stories from people just like you, people that have been there and done that is what these guys need. Herm Edwards delivers his take like no one else can. Check the video after the break.
