Texas High School Football wears Pink?

football_varsity-2010-11

moving_bearImagine this: You’re a 16 year old high school football player. Everything in life seems to be a “big deal,” wearing the latest shoes, clothes and coming to grips with your masculinity and place in life. We all know being a teenager was an awkward time in life. Girls, parties, grades, it all seems to matter. But every Friday night you line up and play a game you love. You’ve got to be more aggressive, more physical and intimidating to your opponent. That’s what being a man is all about right? You need every advantage you can get. Now, imagine that you’ve got to wear a pink uniform. It’s no secret that that teenage boys throw around some very homophobic slurs in an effort to emasculate their opponent. This only could add fuel to the fire.

So, because of that, I’ve got to give some props to the San Marcos Baptist Academy for breaking down some stereotypes for a good cause. Following the lead of the NFL, MLB and many universities SMBA became the first high school football team in Texas to don the pink unis. Last weekend, the SMBA Bears wore pink jerseys as a fundraiser for their “Refuse 2 Lose – Pink Out Charity Game” supporting Central Texas Medical Center. Additionally, the jerseys were sold for charity. Congrats and big-ups to SMBA Bears. Since you’re only in high-school. This Root-Beer is for you. First round is on me.
